This approach ensures that tourism directly supports local artisans and fosters cultural exchange.

Core Initiatives

1. Bamboo-Based Livelihood Support

Uravu’s flagship program focuses on using bamboo as a tool for livelihood generation in rural communities, especially for women. Through the establishment of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and skill development initiatives, Uravu has trained hundreds of rural artisans, enabling them to earn a sustainable income by crafting bamboo products. The initiative has empowered over 200 artisans, with a significant percentage being women, and has increased their daily earnings from ₹20-30 to ₹175-1000.

The bamboo products range from decorative items to practical everyday solutions, offering eco-friendly alternatives to plastic and wood. Through these efforts, Uravu has developed over 600 unique products, which not only serve the local market but also cater to global demands.

2. Bamboo Nursery & Ecological Restoration

Uravu operates the largest bamboo nursery in South India, cultivating over 50 different species of bamboo. The nursery plays a crucial role in supporting the bamboo handicraft industry by providing a steady supply of high-quality bamboo to artisans. Moreover, the cultivation of bamboo aids in environmental restoration by helping combat soil erosion and enhancing soil fertility. Bamboo’s fast-growing nature and carbon-absorbing properties make it an effective solution for promoting ecological balance and sustainability.

3. Training & Skill Development

Uravu provides extensive training programs aimed at spreading bamboo-related knowledge and skills across various segments of society. These include workshops for artisans, designers, and students, covering everything from basic bamboo craft to advanced techniques in sustainable architecture. Uravu also collaborates with governmental and non-governmental organizations, such as UNIDO, NABARD, and KVIC, to broaden the reach of its training programs and ensure that the bamboo industry continues to evolve with changing trends and technologies.

4. Sustainable Bamboo Construction

Uravu promotes bamboo as a sustainable building material through its research and development programs. Bamboo’s strength, flexibility, and rapid growth make it an ideal material for constructing environmentally friendly buildings. Uravu has showcased several successful projects where bamboo was used for constructing low-cost, durable, and energy-efficient homes. These projects serve as models for future sustainable building initiatives in rural and urban areas alike.

5. Art & Cultural Expression

Uravu is also home to Kerala's first and only bamboo art gallery. This gallery serves as a platform for artists to explore bamboo as a medium for artistic expression. The gallery features an array of art pieces, installations, and sculptures that showcase the versatility of bamboo and its role in cultural heritage. The space allows visitors to appreciate bamboo not only as a material for practical use but also as a canvas for creativity and artistic exploration.

Common Facilities and Innovation Hub

Uravu has established a Common Facilities Centre (CFC) that serves as a hub for bamboo product development. Artisans access shared tools, machines, and training at the CFC, which boosts productivity and encourages innovation in product design.

Advocacy and Consultancy

Uravu plays a pivotal role in advocacy and policy consultation, supporting state and national-level bamboo missions. They offer consultancy for bamboo plantation planning, sustainable construction, and integrating bamboo into mainstream industries, both in India and abroad.

The organization proudly shares stories of artisans whose lives have transformed through their involvement with Uravu. Individuals like Jameela, Rakesh, and Ajeesh exemplify how bamboo craftsmanship can provide dignity, financial independence, and artistic fulfillment.
